Best underwater cameras for scuba diving in Australia: 4 models compared

“Waterproof” does not mean “built for diving”: most action cameras stop between 10 and 20 m without a housing. We compared four cameras in stock on Amazon.com.au on their official specs, starting with the question that matters on the reef: how deep do they really go?

🌊 How deep do they really go?

This is the first thing to check. An Open Water Diver is certified to 18 m, an Advanced Open Water Diver to 30 m, and the recreational limit is 40 m. The manufacturer's depth rating has to cover your dives, otherwise a housing is mandatory.

It goes to 20 m with no accessory, which covers an Open Water dive on the reef. With DJI's waterproof case it reaches 60 m. Its large 1/1.1-inch sensor with a variable aperture (f/2.0 to f/4.0) helps on deeper wreck dives such as the Yongala. The listing we link is the Standard Combo.

✅ Pros

  • · Waterproof to 20 m bare, 60 m in its case
  • · Large 1/1.1-inch sensor, f/2.0 to f/4.0 aperture
  • · Video up to 8K at 30 fps
  • · Up to 240 minutes of battery life claimed

OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7

The only true stills camera in this selection. It shoots RAW and has a built-in flash, a 4x optical zoom and macro modes that focus as close as 1 cm, ideal for nudibranchs on Sydney's shore dives or pygmy critters on the reef. Waterproof to 15 m on its own, it goes to 45 m in the manufacturer's PT-059 housing. The listing we link is the black version.

✅ Pros

  • · RAW files, built-in flash, 4x optical zoom
  • · Macro and microscope modes, focus down to 1 cm

🧭 How to choose

1. Start from your depth

Snorkelling the outer reef or a Ningaloo whale shark swim: every model works without a housing. Diving to 18 m: only the DJI Osmo Action 6 goes there with no accessory. Deeper than that, every camera here needs its housing, rated 45 to 60 m – the Insta360 Dive Bundle already includes one.

2. Stills or video?

For wide-angle reef video, an action camera is enough and mounts anywhere. For sharp close-up photos you need a flash or a light, a macro mode and ideally RAW files: that is the territory of the OM SYSTEM TG-7.

3. Blue water needs red

Water absorbs red first. In the clear blue water of the Coral Sea, a red filter rebalances colours between about 5 and 20 m; deeper, or in the shade of a wreck, only a video light brings colours back.

4. Liveaboard logistics

Four or five dives a day drain batteries fast. Carry spare batteries, a multi-port USB charger and anti-fog inserts, and rinse the camera in fresh water after every dive: salt crystals on seals cause most leaks.

5. Protect the reef

Keep fins and the camera off the coral. Master your buoyancy before taking a camera down, and never steady yourself on the reef to get a shot.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Which camera should I choose for diving the Great Barrier Reef?

To film down to 20 m with no accessory, the DJI Osmo Action 6 is the only one of these four that does it without a housing. If you want a complete kit with a 60 m case in the box, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Dive Bundle is the simplest option. For macro stills, the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7.

Can you scuba dive with a GoPro without a housing?

Not deep: the GoPro HERO13 Black is waterproof to 10 m without a housing, enough for snorkelling, not for a typical scuba dive. With the GoPro Protective Housing it goes to 60 m.

How deep does a “waterproof” camera really work?

As deep as the manufacturer states, no more: 10 m for the GoPro HERO13 Black, 12 m for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, 15 m for the OM SYSTEM TG-7 and 20 m for the DJI Osmo Action 6. In their housings they reach 45 to 60 m.

Do I need a red filter in Australia?

In blue tropical water, a red filter helps from about 5 m down to around 20 m. In greener temperate water, such as some Sydney or Victorian sites, a magenta filter suits better. Deeper, a video light is the only real fix.

How do I avoid fog in a housing in the tropics?

Close the housing in air-conditioned, dry air, check that the O-ring is clean, and slide in anti-fog inserts. Don't leave the housing in the sun on deck before the dive: the temperature gap is what makes moisture condense on the lens.
